What are racks?
Racks convert the rotational motion of spur gears into straight-line motion of the rack. Thus, compared to spur gears, racks can generate linear motion.
In this case, the teeth of a rack are no longer arranged around the circumference of a cylinder, but on a straight rod. The mating gear is always a spur gear with external teeth.
Racks have straight flanks, which means that they have no curvature. A gearbox that converts a rotary motion into a linear motion by means of a spur gear (called pinion) and a rack is also called a rack and pinion gear. Especially in machine tools, racks are often used to move machine slides.
